NOTES FROM MWANDI 2008

We're back! Ozzie and I had a wonderful work trip in Mwandi this year. There were 60 patients who qualified for cataract surgery and we completed all 60 surgeries successfully. There were "hic-cups" of course. We arrived in a terrible storm and were delayed screening due to power outages, lost power when one patient was on the table, and, yes, the operating microscope was not working again. Hic-cups, lots of hic-cups. But, hey, it's Africa, right? We are called upon to improvise constantly and create by using what is available to us; I think that is why we love working there!

This was our 9th trip. We told the village that we had planned to serve for 10 years so next year will be our last, at least our last sequential year. They are not going to schedule quite so many surgeries so that we can have a village-wide celebration on our last day. If you've read "Three Cups Of Tea" (or not) it's message is being with the people is as important as your mission task! We feel we have lived that very important premise; we feel Mwandi and its people (and its problems) has become a second family to us.

You make it possible for us to serve. We thank you so much for your support and prayers.
