Ways to engage with “Incarnation”
As Pastor Lara mentioned, our Advent theme, as we prepare for Christmas, is Incarnation. The theme is based on the book Incarnation by Adam Hamilton. There are several ways to engage with this theme.
*Worship - Sermons throughout Advent will be inspired by Incarnation
*“Sunday” School - several Sunday school classes will be utilizing the study guide written to accompany Incarnation. Contact Elizabeth Snelbaker to learn how to join one of these zoom groups. Not all groups meet on Sunday mornings.
*Advent Gatherings - Gather via Zoom at 11:30 Sunday mornings to reflect and discuss with staff the day’s sermon and Incarnation theme
*Personal study - purchase a copy of the book Incarnation and read at your leisure. Videos with Adam Hamilton are available through Amplify. Instructions for signing up for this free resource are on the church website. If you need help accessing Amplify or have questions please contact Elizabeth Snelbaker
CE Fall Review- The Christian Education Team has been busy this fall. Thanks to the committee members and friends who have helped make all these ministry opportunities possible!! It has been awesome to see the resilience and creativity of this committee as they continue to adapt to the changes we all face.
*Gary Chapman - Two wonderful workshops were led by renowned speaker and author Gary Chapman at the end of September. We had participants attend via zoom from coast to coast.
*Operation Christmas Child - Boxes for Operation Christmas Child were available in late October and early November. The collection date is November 16. Congregants can also provide a box by building one online through the Operation Christmas Child website, a feature that was new this year.
*Advent in a Bag - Members and friends of First Pres were able to sign up for “Advent in a Bag.” The bags were packed with appropriate items for each household including - Russian Tea, supplies for making an Advent Candle, devotion, and more.
*Baskets - Goody baskets were delivered to older members of the congregation who are hampered by mobility even in the best of times. The baskets included tasty treats, word search books, and items like hand lotion and chapstick.
*Halloween Scavenger Hunt - 16 Children and their families participated in a Halloween Scavenger Hunt on Oct. 31. They started in the church courtyard and progressed to 5 congregation members’ houses finding hidden pumpkins in each yard containing part of a bible verse and the clue to the next house. At the final house, once the Bible verse had been put together, participants got to make s’mores! Thanks to the Fowlers, Rowlands, Nelsons, Coggins, De Graffs, Johnsons, and Bryans for organizing and hosting this fun event!
*Adult “Sunday” School Classes – several of our Adult “Sunday” School classes have continued to meet via zoom. If you are interested in joining one of these groups contact Elizabeth Snelbaker. Not all classes meet on Sunday morning.
*Jr First and First Kids - has continued to meet through the fall. The kids have had some wonderful discussions as they explored the stories of Creation, Abraham & Sara, and Jacob & Esau.
This year we are doing Advent Gatherings in a whole new way! We will gather via zoom at 11:30 Sunday mornings for an opportunity to share questions and thoughts about that day’s worship theme and sermon. Our Advent theme this year is “Incarnation” based on the Adam Hamilton book with that title. During our Advent gatherings staff will be able to comment and respond to your thoughts as you engage with this topic through the Amplify videos, the book, a class, or worship. We are excited to enter into conversation as we celebrate Advent and anticipate Christ’s Incarnation.
